Biography
Shueisha Inc. is a major Japanese publishing of magazines, literature, art, non-fiction, reference books, and manga. It is the largest publishing company in Japan. It is part of the Hitotsubashi Group along with Shogakukan and Hakusensha.
Shueisha began in 1925 as the entertainment division of Shogakukan. The following year, on August 8th, it was split from Shogakukan and became an independent company.
On July 11, 1968, Shueisha launched Shōnen Jump (later renamed Weekly Shōnen Jump) which started the Jump line of magazines.
On December 1, 1973, Shueisha founded Hakusensha, a publisher of manga magazines.
In 2002, Shueisha purchased an equity interest in VIZ Communications (later VIZ Media) to become part-owner with Shogakukan.
On September 22, 2014, Shueisha launched Shōnen Jump+ an online manga magazine
On January 28, 2019, Shueisha launched Manga Plus, the global, English-language version of Shōnen Jump+.
In August 2018, Shueisha, along with Kadokawa, Kodansha, and Shogakukan, filed a motion with the Tokyo District Court, requesting Cloudflare to stop hosting content for several piracy websites. The parties reached a settlement in June 2019; Cloudflare agreed to stop caching content on its Japanese servers from specified piracy websites if the Tokyo District Court deems that the sites are infringing on copyrights. On February 1, 2022, the four publishers filed a lawsuit against Cloudflare which they claim distributes data for manga piracy sites that infringe on the publishers' copyrights, and they seek an injunction of about ¥460 million in compensation for damages.
