Biography

Seven Seas Entertainment is an independent, award-winning American publisher of Japanese manga, light novels, and Chinese danmei and manhua translated into English as well as original English-language manga. Seven Seas was founded in 2004 by Jason DeAngelis. Originally, it only published "world manga," a synonym for original English-language manga coined by DeAngelis. In 2017, Seven Seas entered into a partnership with [J-Novel Club](https://ranobedb.org/publisher/23) to release print editions of some of their titles. In 2018, Seven Seas won the Harvey Award for Best Manga for its English version of My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness. On November 20, 2020, Seven Seas announced that it would be switching distributors worldwide, with all imprints moving to Penguin Random House starting on July 1, 2021. In early 2021, it was found by light novel fans on Reddit that Seven Seas had been making alterations to their English translations of certain light novels, namely [Classroom of the Elite](https://ranobedb.org/series/4557), [Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation](https://ranobedb.org/series/3336), and [I'm in Love with the Villainess](https://ranobedb.org/series/17064). This was seen by fans as intentional censorship due to the fact some of the material removed or altered was controversial. The original authors were not consulted. Translators were not made aware of the changes until after the fact. Seven Seas announced that they would be revising these changes, republishing the affected volumes, and making changes to their editing process to "make sure important lines are not lost." On May 23, 2022, employees of Seven Seas formed a union called "United Workers of the Seven Seas." A week later, Seven Seas management announced they would not recognize the union and had a brought a case against them with the NLRB. On June 24, 2022, the United Workers of the Seven Seas announced that Seven Seas had agreed to voluntarily recognize the union.
